A MAN has been charged with the murder of a taxi driver whose bloodied cab was found abandoned in Sydney's northwest.


The 22-year-old man was arrested on a separate matter at Macquarie Park, a suburb adjacent to where the taxi was yesterday found in Eastwood.

The victim is 67-year-old taxi driver Robert Woodger, from Sydney's eastern suburbs.

A passerby found the abandoned taxi on the corner of Warrawong and Read streets at 6.15am (AEST) yesterday and contacted police.

A substance believed to be blood was found inside the vehicle.

A police spokeswoman said today that the man had been charged with murder.

The 22-year-old Chinese national was arrested inside the grounds of Macquarie University following reports of a man trespassing on the grounds, police said.

He was taken to Ryde police station where detectives questioned him about Mr Woodger's disappearance.

He was later charged with murder and refused police bail to face Ryde Local Court later today.

Detectives attached to Strike Force Russellton, established to investigate the incident, are yet to find Mr Woodger's body.

They would like to speak with anyone who saw the taxi in Eastwood and its surrounding suburbs between 3am and 5.30am yesterday.

Student faces charge of killing cab driver

A STUDENT at Macquarie University admitted he was the owner of a knife found inside the blood-filled taxi of a missing cab driver, a court has heard.
But Gu, 22, denied to police that he owned a blood-covered tomahawk, gaffer tape and clothes also found in the abandoned taxi driven by Robert Woodger, police told Ryde Local Court yesterday.

Nor had Gu been able to shed any light on the whereabouts of the body of the 67-year-old Coogee father of three, who police said they believed had been murdered, owing to the large quantity of blood found inside the vehicle and its boot and on exterior doors.

Gu, who the police prosecutor, Sergeant Mohit Kumar, said had been living at an Eastwood boarding house for three years, appeared before the magistrate Jennifer Betts charged with Mr Woodger's murder.

He had dressings on his fingers and said he had cut them while picking up knives.

The appearance came as teams of police continue to search reserves and bushland around Marsfield and Eastwood for a body. Mr Woodger disappeared after dropping a fare from the city in Marsfield at 3am on Wednesday. He then picked up a second fare. It was about that time the GPS tracking system in the taxi went dead, the court heard.

In a statement read to the court by Sergeant Kumar and Ms Betts during an unsuccessful bail application by Gu, police alleged slash marks had been found across the driver's headrest and that a security camera film showed a man in the back passenger seat at 3.17am and 3.59am.

Fears that Mr Woodger had been murdered were raised after the taxi was found at 6am.

Ms Betts ordered Gu to appear before Central Local Court on Monday.
