Bright red fruit clings to the branches of high bush cranberry growing in Canada's Jasper National Park. Though they don't have quite the same taste as traditional cranberries, the high bush variety is quite tasty when the berries are young and would make a fine replacement at the Thanksgiving table.

A turkey vulture spreads its wings in one of California's deserts. Even though desert is the dominant landscape of our solar system—with Mars shivering and Venus baking in aridity—the Earth has managed to keep the oceans that foster life. But with one third of our landmass arid, scientists warn we could tip our climate toward that of Mars or Venus.

A rain-slicked street reflects the neon signs in Godiva's shop windows. Founded in Brussels after World War II, the luxurious chocolate brand was named after the legendary Lady Godiva who is said to have ridden her horse through a busy
marketplace unclothed in order to convince her husband to lower taxes.

Mars, 2000

During the first billion years of existence, Mars was an active and violent place with volcanic eruptions, meteor showers, and huge floods cutting channels across its surface. Since then, lava and wind have continued to mold its shape into strange and beautiful formations, like this dune field in Herschel Basin which appears to be cemented in place.

Village women, all dressed in straw hats and sarongs, harvest rice near Jinghong. The region is known as Sip Song Panna, meaning twelve thousand irrigated fields. The fields grow mainly wet rice, but also tobacco. Water buffalo still do much of the plowing, although increasingly threshers, small tractors, and other farm vehicles are used.

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, 1982

"Lesser snow geese and greater sandhill cranes mingle in November at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. The sandhills, along with some 30 whooping cranes, migrate from Grays Lake NWR in Idaho. Both whoopers and snow geese have white plumage with black wingtips, so the hunting season demands strict control. Goose hunters must pass a recognition test to shoot on the refuge, but need only a license and duck stamp nearby."

A ghost crab lies in wait under a thin blanket of wet sand at Loango National Park. Established in 2002, the park is designed to allow visitors access to this remarkable stretch of wilderness on Africa's western coast without interfering with the wildlife that teem along its shores.

Fishermen begin the round-up during Trebon's autumn carp harvest. Not considered a food fish by many, carp is very popular in the Czech Republic and other parts of Eastern Europe, where it is often served fried with a side of potato salad as a traditional Christmas Eve dinner.

"ot even a swarm of flies disturbs a cheetah's after-dinner catnap. Most delicate of the big cats, cheetahs choose to flee rather than fight when confronted with danger. 'People are their biggest problem,' says [conservationist] Laurie Marker. 'Whether cheetahs thrive in the wild or are lost in our lifetime is ultimately up to us.'"
