An old man carries a basket of corn during China's harvest time, when all non-essential work ceases
and seemingly every available space is used for corn drying. In fact, when a 2,100-year-old terra
cotta army was found at Han emperor Jing Di's tomb, excavation was halted so workers could harvest corn.

Boulders on Iceland's Surtsey Island may look old, but they are actually as young as the island itself, which was born after volcanic eruptions on November 14, 1963. Iceland constitutes the largest above-sea section of the 10,000-mile (16,093-kilometer) Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a mostly underwater mountain range that zigzags vertically through the Atlantic Ocean.

A garbage truck dumps its load at a U.S. landfill. More than 70 percent of the 180 million tons of refuse Americans throw away each year ends up in landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Compacted repeatedly by bulldozers, the inner recesses of landfills receive no light, air, or moisture, making biodegradation impossible. Scientists have even found hotdogs buried in 1974 still intact 15 years later.

The reservoir, fed by a permanent spring, offers swimming in summer and ice skating in winter."

In Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea erupts sending lava high into the air. This molten rock comes from deep within the Earth, where residual heat from the planet's formation combines with heat from the gradual decay of radioactive elements trapped below.

Two curious Adélie penguins stray from their group to appraise a photographer.
Although penguins “really do have a personality,” insists scientist Wayne
Trivelpiece of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, “you wouldn’t want one as a
pet.” Beyond the braying, wheezing, and squawking, penguins exude a truly
noxious smell of guano.

The Royal Yacht Britannia flies its colors as it enters Victoria Harbour when
Hong Kong was still under British control. "Albert is much amused," wrote Queen
Victoria in 1841, "at my having got this island of Hong Kong." Today the sun may
have set on the British Empire, but it still rises over Hong Kong, reunited with
China since 1997.

National Airport, Virginia, USA, Date Unknown

A jet takes off under a waning moon at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. Built on the sand flats of the Potomac River, the riverside runways required 20 million cubic yards (15.3 million cubic meters) of sand and gravel to raise the site 20 feet (6 meters) above the river level. Construction began November 21, 1938, under the watchful eye of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who chose the site and helped lay the cornerstone of the original terminal building.

With the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains in the background, a car heads down Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. The 2,600-square-mile (6,734-square-kilometer) park, with its dramatic snow- and ice-capped peaks, was first created to protect hot springs found in a cave by three railroad workers in 1883.
