"Magic curtain of fog envelops the...Golden Gate Bridge on an autumn afternoon. The south tower was sunk 35 feet (11 meters) deep into bedrock, a next-to-impossible feat because of the furious currents in this strait. Cables expand and contract with changing temperature and traffic load. Approaching ships are assured a minimum clearance of 220 feet (67 meters) in the main channel beneath the span. A tanker bearing crude oil—the area's largest import—slips into the bay, which is still, as Richard Henry Dana wrote in 1859, 'emporium of a new world, the awakened Pacific.'"

Olives are harvested by hand each November at California's B.R. Cohn Winery. The technique for
harvesting the bitter fruit may vary from orchard to orchard, but it is usually a strenuous task as
workers strip the olives by hand or beat the branches with sticks. Once the olives fall, they are
gathered and crushed, then either pressed or spun in a centrifuge in order to extract the precious oil.

Snow geese take flight over the 164-mile-long (264-kilometer-long) St. Croix River. Separating Minnesota and Wisconsin before emptying into the Mississippi River, the St. Croix and its tributary the Namekagon were among the first rivers to be protected by the 1968 Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, a Congressional decree which guarantees these rivers will not be industrialized, dammed, or developed.

(1968年老美就认识到要保护自然形成山林湖泊，而不是为了几十年的经济利益而人为开发。自然生态系统净化污染的能力，是同等面积的人工生态的夸张点说，是上百倍，单单为了维护人工生态就要投入大量的人力物力。真不知道，有些开发原始森林的决议是怎么被“人大代表”们通过的。)

"The trucks—big green flatbed diesels—are loaded to preposterous heights. Boxy steel shipping containers provide the sturdy foundation for huge burlap sacks containing prayer mats, sandals, blankets…and woven plastic bags labeled 'China Rice/Product of Libya.' Then—often 15 to 20 feet (4 to 6 meters) off the ground—rides an upper layer of passengers draped in robes and packed together as tight as the rice in the white sacks they sit upon."

A log cabin, equipped with an enormous satellite, overlooks the mighty Yukon River. Frozen solid over the winter, the 1,979-mile-long (3,184-kilometer-long) river is born again every spring with a roar of breaking ice, leaving the villages along its banks susceptible to floods from ice jams.

(马丁 路德 Martin Luther'1483-1546'不是那个现代倡导美国的肤色平等运动的 "马丁路德金"Martin Luther King".生于德国,在艾尔福特大学,连读了个神学硕士,在本科毕业以后,在Erfurt教堂清修期间偷着翻看了古圣经,在威登堡 (Wurttemberg)拿了神学博士学位后,受罗马天主教召,去罗马,期间想起古圣经所记,与罗马天主教相悖甚多.回家后按照自己对上帝旨意的理解, 创立新教,与天主教殊途.只是我不明白天主教徒为什么也来给他庆生,难道都是上帝的子民,加上宗教对社会有益,又因年代久远,所以一块拜了?可有达人点拨我否?)

有意思啊,原来后面这个圣马丁
不是新教的创始人 天主教徒拜的也不是他,
,而是指生于公元316年的罗马军人马丁 以慈悲为怀著称。
在一个冬夜，马丁遇到一个行将冻僵的乞丐。马丁把衣服劈成两半、将一半送与乞丐。晚上就梦到身披这半件衣服的基督耶稣。于是马丁信教、清修。当时的一位主教辞世后，马丁当选为新主教。但他坚辞不受。说他为避任猫在一个鹅舍里，结果鹅的叫声泄露了他.他被逼无奈,接受了享福的主教位置.
当然11月11日成为了孩子们胡吃海玩的好日子,还有为了惩罚乱叫唤的鹅
德国人今天还要吃 马丁鹅。

A crowded footbridge during Osaka's rush hour dramatizes Japan's number one problem in 1970: population density. Since then, the problem has only worsened. Japanese government data show the country's population density increased from 720 people per square mile (281 per square kilometer) in 1970 to 870 per square mile (340 per square kilometer) in 2000.
