"Floating offerings of flowers and candles are sold in Varanasi to light the way for pious rituals. But locals also use the river in ordinary ways, doing laundry or washing hair. Devout Hindus are reluctant to believe that a river as holy as the Ganges is 'polluted.' Some environmentalists use softer language to suggest that Mother Ganges is 'suffering.'"

"Hunting at dusk, adults and pups trot across a floodplain during the Okavango Delta's September dry season. Youngsters four months and older do their best to follow the pack, but older dogs sometimes hide tired pups in the brush, safe from lions, and return for them later."

A sticky September snow coats the Icefields Parkway in Alberta's Jasper National Park. The majestic highway, designed to showcase the national parks through which it passes, stretches along the Continental Divide and skirts the massive Columbia Icefield, a reservoir of ice that covers 130 square miles (337 square kilometers) and is a 1000 feet (305 meters) deep.

Children play baseball in the colonial heart of Trinidad, Cuba. Without a railroad until 1919 or a highway until the 1950s, Trinidad was isolated from the rest of Cuba and the rest of the world—a fate that enabled it to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.

Tourists gather outside the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, part of the Temple of Heaven complex built during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The hall was used by emperors of the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties to offer sacrifices to heaven and to pray for abundant crops of grain.

Crowds of Muslims flock to the Dome of the Rock mosque during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. This spot in Jerusalem is sacred to three of the world's great religions—Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
In 2006, Ramadan will be observed from September 23 through October 22.
