Mount Edziza Provincial Park, Canada, 2005
Photograph by Kevin Burke
A hiker slogs uphill through the Spectrum Range at volcanic Mount Edziza Provincial Park in northwest British Columbia. With less than 300 visitors annually, grizzly sightings are much more likely than hiker sightings.
(This photograph by Kevin Burke of Montrose, California, was a runner-up in the second round of Adventure magazine's Action Photography Contest. )

Along the Indian River, Dominica, 1996
Photograph by Michael Melford
A bois mang tree grows along the banks of the Indian River. With a life span of 150 years, these 100-foot- (30-meter-) tall trees are supported by sinewy, buttressed roots that wind in and amongst themselves. The roots don't just support the riverbank, they are the riverbank, making the ground beyond look like a wall-to-wall carpet of wooden eels.

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Dominica: The Caribbean's 'Nature Island'," June 1997, National Geographic magazine)

Dancers decked out in pinwheels of red feathers wait for the merrymaking to begin at Notting Hill Carnival, one of Europe's largest festivals. The carnival was started in the 1960s by West Indian immigrants who wanted to counteract area race riots, and today it lures fans from around the globe to join the exotic two-day party.
This year, the Notting Hill Carnival will be held August 27 and 28.

Intense hurricane winds pummel the shoreline. This rotating storm that carries winds of at least 74 miles (119 kilometers) an hour is called a "hurricane" when it develops over the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. It is a "cyclone" when it forms over the Bay of Bengal and the northern Indian Ocean, and "typhoon" in the western Pacific.

Switzerland, 1968
Photograph by Thomas J. Abercrombie
Two burly Swiss men wrestle in front of a rapt audience during the Unspunnenfest. Held in and around Interlaken, this festival was first staged in 1805 on the grounds of Unspunnen Castle. The highlight of this celebration of folk dancing, yodeling, and Alpine sports is the Steinstossen, the throwing of the Unspunnen Stone, a 184-pound (83-kilogram) glacial boulder.
This year the Unspunnen Festival will be held September 1-3.

A photographer and assistant brave a close encounter with gray reef sharks off Rongelap Atoll. The Marshall Islands were showered with radioactive fallout when the United States detonated a massive hydrogen bomb on Bikini Atoll in 1954.

Sequim, Washington, Date Unknown
Photograph by Sam Abell
A horse stands in a field of wildflowers on the outskirts of Sequim, Washington. Although the Olympic Mountains are a rain trap for the moist Pacific winds that annually dump 140 inches (366 centimeters) of precipitation on the range's winward slopes, they also cast a "rain shadow" over the northeast side of the peninsula. This happy fact gives Sequim the nickname, "Sunny Sequim."
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Olympic Peninsula," May 1984, National Geographic magazine)
Sequim,
Sequim”
The Olympic Peninsula," )
