Hiroshima, Japan, 1994
Photograph by Jodi Cobb
A couple walks through a Hiroshima cemetery for victims of the world's first atom bomb attack. Detonated by the United States on August 6, 1945, the A-bomb fulfilled its promise of hastening the end of World War II when Japan surrendered nine days later. Today Hiroshima is an ultra-modern city with few battle scars, except for those in the memories of the hibakusha—bomb survivors.

Hiroshima: Up from Ground Zero,")

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia, 1980
Photograph by Richard Perry
Water lilies flourish in the tea-tinted bogs of Okefenokee Swamp. The swamp covers an area in southeast Georgia that is about half the size of Rhode Island. Okefenokee is an Anglicization of an American Indian word meaning "trembling earth" and describes the soft, spongy peat moss that gives an unstable feel to the swamp's drier areas.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, the National Geographic book Wilderness Challenge, 1980)

A Mexican gray wolf snuggles with two pups at the Sedgwick County Zoo. At one time, gray wolves were among the most widely distributed mammals on Earth. However, by the early 1900s, unchecked trapping, poisoning, and hunting of these highly intelligent predators drove the species to the brink of extinction.

A teenager shoots some hoops for charity at the Tillamook County Fair in Oregon. Featuring a horse show, a hypnotist, and the squealing Pig-N-Ford Race, this county fair is just one of hundreds across the United States that mix family entertainment with agricultural competition.

The Gully, Off the Coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, 1997
Photograph by Flip Nicklin
"Symmetry in motion, two whales surface and exhale in union, emerging to the rarest of North Atlantic days—a clear sky and a glassy sea. Although small groups often maneuver in tight formation for a short time...research suggests that the social bonds of most bottlenose whales are as transient as a teenager's. A month from now these whales will be swimming in sync with new best friends."

St. George's, Grenada, 1984
Photograph by David Alan Harvey
"Giving the devil his due with greased bodies and dead snakes, Carnival revelers play 'jab-jab,' patois for Satan. The Evil One must be appeased before one can gain entry to heaven, says the street-theater script—bizarre, but all in fun."
Grenada's Carnival is celebrated in mid-August to avoid a conflict with the anniversary of their independence from Great Britain on February 7. This year, revelers take to the streets on August 14 and 15.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Marking Time in Grenada," November 1984, National Geographic magazine)
Marking Time in Grenada,")

When the tide goes out, a starfish is exposed to the elements in Tongass National Forest. A popular spot for tourists along the Inside Passage, the Tongass is the largest remaining temperate forest in the world—even as the logging industry lobbies for greater access to it.
